communication on the horizon

The bubs has finally decided that talking might be worth his while, after all. In just the past couple of weeks he’s started actively using lots of new words, repeating things we say to him, and generally showing an interest in being understood.

A few of the things he’s saying these days:

My-nees kine  Winnie’s crying

Guck!  duck

Cag  cat

Jew-gee  Julie

Neal  Neal

Elmo!!  Elmo

ite  light

ah-wigh Oh, boy

by  boy

Oh, no!!!  Oh, no

There are lots more in this vein, plus he has mastered various animal sounds, notably “woof-woof”, “me-oooow”, “tweet-tweet”, and something that sounds vaguely like a horse whinnying. “Woof-woof” is far and away the favorite, and when we take him walking in the neighborhood, he is constantly engaged in barking at dogs, something he started doing while we were in California for our last visit. Amusingly enough, they usually respond in kind. Maybe that’s why things have progressed so slowly – this kid appears to be learning English as a second language, having already mastered Dog.
