Gardening, part 1,226,938,195

It seems like we have been getting our garden done in teeny-tiny stages for the past, oh, three months. I guess Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all. I believe we are now pretty much done planting. A neighbor kindly gave us some onion starts last night so we need to put those in, but otherwise it is just sitting back and letting things grow – oh, yes, and weeding, thinning, watering, pest monitoring, etc.

The bubs loves being in the garden with us, but is tragically prone to injury out there. The ground is fairly uneven so he is forever tripping and falling, sometimes into ant hills (bad for him) or onto fragile seedlings (bad for them). This weekend he fell and scraped his stomach pretty hard across a wooden stake we were using to mark off one of our seed beds. His shirt got twisted around the top of the stake in the process and so he couldn’t free himself and I had to run across the garden to disentangle him while he cried hysterically. Poor kiddo; although he seems fine, he now sports an interesting and painful-looking scratch pattern on his tummy.

When he’s not hurting himself, he’s making a mess of himself. He ‘s always looking for spots where water has collected and trudging through them, or picking up clumps of dirt and throwing them around, sifting them through his fingers, or rubbing them in his hair with no apparent rhyme or reason – he just loves dirt. Luckily it’s getting warm enough now that we can hose him down before we take him in the house. We also bought a misting attachment for our hose that he likes to play in, and that helps get the worst of the mud off without any protest. Ah, summer!
