Julie came into town last week and, like the good hosts that we are, we did our best to keep her entertained. We had been planning to go to Shrek the Third at the drive-in for a while. Jared worked late on Saturday and we were cutting it close when we left the house. In fact, as we approached the drive-in, we figured the movie was probably just starting. Unfortunately, the approach took a long time. It turned out that traffic was backed up for at least three blocks in either direction waiting to turn in to the drive-in.
Jared and I knew from sad experience that even once you make that initial turn in, you still have a good ten or fifteen minute wait to get up to the ticket booth. So after looking over the situation and figuring we would either get up there and find the movie was sold out, or get in and miss the first forty-five minutes, we opted out.
We still wanted to see the movie, and Julie seemed game, so we went in search of another theater. We found one, but when we noticed that the parking lot was full and that an adjoining parking lot was starting to overflow with movie theater traffic, we figured out chances of getting into a movie at a decent hour were pretty slim, so we opted out of that, too.
Plan C was to go get some famous local frozen custard. When we pulled up outside the place, it seemed pretty crowded. Jared went in and checked out the lobby area, then came outside and said the drive-through line would be shorter. We pulled into the drive-through and after idling for five or ten minutes without advancing, we were approached by an employee who told us through our open window that the custard shop was out of custard. Her exact words were, "I'm sorry, but we're out of everything." So we didn't even get the choice to opt out; it was made for us.
Plan D was to go someplace else for dessert. Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of places open past 10 p.m. in this neck of the woods. Jared finally took us to a place called Stoneground, famous for pizza, pasta, and great dessert. As it turns out, they only offer one dessert -- tiramisu. I always feel like maybe I shouldn't eat tiramisu because it does have a bit of alcohol in it. The ladyfingers are soaked in rum, but I figure it's not even the equivalent of a tablespoon of cough syrup, so I don't obsess too much about it. Oddly enough, although this joint definitely served up liquor, the tiramisu was alcohol-free. It just wasn't the same.
All in all, a disappointing outing. Not only is there nothing to do here, but if you think of something, so will 10,000 other people. Next time we'll just drive up the mountain and "look at the lights".
