Last night, we went over to Ethan's to take a look at... TWO PYGMY GOATS. They were terribly cute. Boy and girl -- siblings, we think. They're about two feet tall at most and have tiny little horns and make small goat-type noises. They're chubby little things, but light on their feet. Ethan managed to pick the female up at one point, but mainly they cowered behind rose bushes and the corner of the house, peering out at us inquisitively to see if we meant them harm. Adding to the fun was the fact that they were sharing a backyard with three dogs -- a yellow lab, what looked to my inexperienced eye like a beagle-type dog, and Dan, Ethan's small dog of dubious ancestry.
Between the dogs and the goats, it was pure chaos. John came with us, and the lab kept jumping up on him every two seconds. While quickly retreating from its affectionate advances, he commented that he felt "a little uneasy around all the dogs". John kept a conservative distance from the pygmy goats, too. Pork Chop, on the other hand, was scratching and petting the dogs and chasing the goats around and generally having the time of his life. It's interesting -- John and I feel threatened by waggly tails and big slobbery tongues, whereas Pork Chop told me that when a dog comes up to him wagging its tail and with its tongue hanging out, eager to be scratched and rubbed and get some affection, he recognizes "a kindred spirit".
Anyway, it was a three-ring circus out there and all we have to show for it is this crappy picture.
